A plastic surgery consultation can sometimes feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. At our Richmond office, we aim to make this a laid-back experience where you can discuss your concerns and ask questions in a comfortable environment.
Nearly 25% of cosmetic surgery complaints arise simply because crucial questions weren’t asked during the initial consultation.
To prevent that, I’ve created this clear, straightforward checklist to help you confidently cover every critical detail during your meeting with me.
What to Prep Before You Walk In
Being prepared helps you feel calm and ensures the consultation is productive. Here’s exactly what to gather beforehand:
- Medical history: Try to make sure you are aware of your medical problems, allergies, and previous surgeries. As I remind my patients, plastic surgery is still surgery, and knowing your medical background, like high blood pressure or diabetes, helps me build a customized and safe surgical plan for you.
- Wish pictures: Feel free to bring in before and after images that clearly represent your desired outcomes. Remember to avoid the “Photoshop trap,” which is unrealistic online images that have been heavily edited. This can be most helpful if the patient’s before represents a similar body type to yours.
- Verify credentials: Check your surgeon’s certification via the American Board of Plastic Surgery website.
- Bring support: Some patients prefer to have a trusted friend or family member with them to take notes, so you won’t miss important details. You’ll also have someone to discuss your thoughts with after the consultation. This is entirely optional, but make sure this person is supportive and someone you can be your true, authentic self around.
The Consultation
During your consultation, I will gather some background on your medical, surgical, and family history. This is a great time to get to know each other.
We will then discuss the areas of your body you are concerned about, and I will perform a physical exam of these areas. After understanding your areas of concern and goals, we will discuss your surgical options.
I will walk you through the surgery, anesthesia, and postoperative recovery. During this appointment, feel free to ask any questions you may have. We want you to feel empowered and confident in your decisions.
Expected Results & Limitations
Results from cosmetic procedures become more apparent as swelling diminishes, typically over weeks or months.
As I’ve explained to patients, being within 10 to 15 pounds of your desired weight can greatly enhance lifelong outcomes.
Scars are inevitable. However, strategic placement and advanced techniques significantly reduce visibility. Do not start scar care before your surgeon has cleared you to do so, as this can cause issues early in the healing process.
Financial Transparency
You’ll receive a clear breakdown, including surgeon’s fees, facility costs, anesthesia charges, required garments, and all post-operative care.
After consultation, you will meet my patient care coordinator, Maureen. She will explain the surgical quote in full detail, ensuring complete financial transparency.
You’ll learn about financing plans, payment timelines, and flexible options tailored to your budget. We provide this information upfront so you can confidently plan your procedure.
Consultation Red Flags and How to Spot Them
Knowing warning signs protects your safety and satisfaction. Consider walking away if you encounter:
- High-pressure sales tactics or “today-only” discounts: Ethical surgeons won’t rush decisions. Your comfort and informed choice always come first.
- Refusal to provide credentials: Always confirm your plastic surgeon is board-certified. Your safety depends on these rigorous standards. You can use this website to verify that your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
- Meeting your surgeon on the day of surgery: You should always meet your surgeon well ahead of your procedure (even if this is done virtually) so you can ensure that you and the surgeon are a good match and they understand your needs.
- Little to no postoperative follow-up: Plastic surgeons rely on thorough follow-up to ensure patients heal well. If your surgeon is not the one who will see you in follow-ups, I consider this a red flag.
- Dismissiveness towards your questions or downplaying risks: At my practice, tough questions are always welcome. Your concerns deserve thorough and respectful answers.
Remember, the best results happen when safety and clarity guide your decision-making, with aesthetics following naturally.
