Loose abdominal skin, separated muscles, breasts that have lost volume or shape—these are real, physical changes. As both a surgeon and a mom, I understand that firsthand.
A mommy makeover is a customized combination of procedures, typically a breast procedure paired with a tummy tuck and liposuction, performed in a single surgery. One anesthetic, one recovery. That’s the whole point: addressing multiple areas at once so you’re not going through this twice.
Why I Customize Every Mommy Makeover Plan
There’s no standard mommy makeover. Every woman’s body responds to pregnancy differently, so every surgical plan should be different too.
During your consultation, I’ll examine what’s changed, listen to what bothers you most, and build a plan around your specific concerns.
The most common combinations I perform are:
- Tummy tuck + breast augmentation: For women who’ve lost abdominal tightness and breast volume
- Tummy tuck + breast lift: For women whose breasts have dropped or deflated but don’t want implants
- Tummy tuck + breast lift with implants: For women who need both lift and volume restoration
- Tummy tuck + breast reduction: For women whose breasts have become larger after pregnancy and are causing discomfort
I almost always include liposuction of the flanks and abdomen as part of the tummy tuck component. It creates a smoother waistline and better overall contour.
Because I use my drainless tummy tuck technique with progressive tension sutures, the abdominal recovery is more comfortable than a traditional approach.
The reason breast and abdominal procedures work so well together is that they complement each other in recovery. You’re already resting, already off your feet, already in that two-week window of taking it easy.
Adding a breast procedure to a tummy tuck doesn’t meaningfully extend that recovery timeline, but it saves you from going through a second surgery down the road.
A Procedure That Isn’t Just for Moms
Despite the name, a mommy makeover isn’t exclusively for women who’ve had children.
I perform the same combination of procedures for patients who’ve undergone significant weight loss and are experiencing similar changes. These could be loose skin, deflated breasts, and abdominal laxity.
The surgical approach is the same: address the areas that bother you in one coordinated plan.
Are You a Good Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?
The best candidates have finished having children, are at or near a stable weight, and are in good overall health. Here’s what I look for:
- Within 10 to 15 pounds of your goal weight
- Done having children; pregnancy after a mommy makeover can undo the results
- Non-smoker
- Able to take two full weeks off for recovery, with help at home for childcare and household tasks
That last point matters more than people expect. You will not be able to lift your kids for four weeks.
If your children are young, you need a plan for that. Ask for help from your partner, family, or even hired help. I’d rather have this conversation with you before surgery than have you struggling at home after.
Mommy Makeover Recovery at a Glance
Recovery from a mommy makeover is a process, not an event. Understanding what to expect at each stage helps you prepare, and helps you recognize when things are going exactly as they should.
Weeks 1–2
This is the hardest stretch. You’ll be sore, swollen, and moving carefully. You’ll be wearing a compression garment on your abdomen and a supportive bra for your breasts.
You won’t be allowed to lift anything over 10 pounds, including your children, but walking is encouraged from day one. Because I use the drainless tummy tuck technique, you won’t have to manage drains, which makes this phase significantly more manageable.
Weeks 2–4
By this time, the soreness eases, but the restrictions stay. No exercise, no heavy lifting. Your body is healing internally even as you start to feel better externally. It’s important to be patient with yourself. People start to generally feel much better after day 14 and can return to driving and light chores.
Weeks 4–6
I’ll clear you to resume normal activity and exercise based on how you’re healing.
Months 2–6
Swelling continues to resolve, and your final results emerge. Most patients see their near-final shape around month three, with subtle refinement continuing for up to six months.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the surgery take?
A mommy makeover typically takes three to five hours, depending on which procedures we’re combining. It’s performed under general anesthesia, and you’ll have the option to go home the same day.
Can I have more children after a mommy makeover?
Physically, yes, but I strongly recommend against it. Pregnancy will stretch the muscles and skin I’ve repaired, and the results of your tummy tuck in particular may be significantly compromised. I recommend completing your family before scheduling this procedure.
Is it safe to combine multiple procedures at once?
When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon in an accredited facility, combining these procedures is safe and well-established. The key is patient selection; I won’t combine procedures if it would compromise your safety. That’s a judgment call I make for each patient.
