As a board-certified plastic surgeon in Richmond, I often have patients ask me what the difference is between mini and full tummy tucks. Let me explain the differences so you can make an informed decision about which is right for you.

Key Differences of a Mini and Full Tummy Tuck

When patients visit our Richmond office for tummy tuck consultations, they often have a specific area of concern—the lower abdomen.

However, as I explain in the video above, the choice between a mini and full tummy tuck isn’t just about the size of the incision. It’s about effectively addressing your specific needs.

A mini tummy tuck focuses only on the area below the belly button and has a shorter incision length. It’s ideal for patients with lower abdomen concerns only, and it typically has a shorter recovery time. In my practice I have found that the ideal candidate for a mini tummy tuck is rare, as pregnancy usually changes to the abdominal wall above AND below the belly button.

Meanwhile, a full tummy tuck addresses both the upper and lower abdomen. It repairs separated abdominal muscles, creates a new belly button position when needed, and has more comprehensive and transformational results.

What is the “Frowny Face” Test?

One simple way I help patients determine if they need a full tummy tuck is by using what I call the “frowny face” test.

If you see transverse creases above your belly button and a slight downward curve to your navel, this often indicates that you have laxity above the belly button as well as below. This makes you a better candidate for a full tummy tuck.

Tummy Tuck Recovery Expectations

  • Weeks 1-2: can expect to be out of work and at home recovering
  • Weeks 3-4: resume driving, light activities
  • Weeks 4-8: resume light exercises
  • Weeks 8-12: resume all normal activities with no restrictions

Muscle Repair: A Critical Consideration

During a full tummy tuck, we can repair separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti), which is especially common after pregnancy. This repair is key to achieving optimal results and restoring core strength.

Making the Right Choice

The best candidates for either procedure should typically:

  • Be within 10-15 pounds of their ideal weight
  • Are in good overall health
  • Have realistic expectations about results

During your consultation at our Richmond office, we’ll carefully evaluate your skin elasticity, muscle separation, areas of concern, and overall health history to determine if you qualify for a tummy tuck procedure.

At Reddy Plastic Surgery, we use advanced techniques to optimize your results and recovery. These include:
